Marla Cocalis, MSW, M.Ed
Senior Buddy Program Manager
Marla serves as the Program Manager of the Senior Buddy Program in Miami, where she leads student chapters, oversees program operations, and drives growth and impact. She provides training and ongoing support to student volunteers, ensuring they are well-prepared to build meaningful relationships with older adults. Marla also collaborates closely with local care facilities to align program efforts with the needs of seniors and works with community partners to foster relationships that advance the organization’s mission.
Originally from Champaign, Illinois, Marla was raised by parents deeply rooted in service—her mother, a microbiologist, and her father, a Presbyterian minister—both passionate about social justice and making the world a better place. Growing up in a tight-knit extended family that gathered for Saturday breakfasts and worked together on the family’s Christmas tree farm (where Marla specialized in wreath-making), she developed a strong commitment to connection, service, and giving back.
Marla holds a Master’s degree in Social Work and has worked extensively in youth and senior services across Phoenix, San Diego, and Chicago, offering counseling, case management, and support to homebound seniors. Inspired by her experience as an ESL instructor, she later earned a Master’s in Education and went on to teach in public schools in Chicago and Savannah. Her passion for education culminated in founding Savannah Honor Academy, a private elementary school she led for a decade.
Now, Marla is thrilled to return to her original calling—supporting isolated seniors—through her work at StudentsCare. She is grateful for the opportunity to blend her expertise in social work and education to empower student volunteers and champion the wellbeing of older adults.
